Gustav Mahler’s song cycles explore the extremes of human emotion. In this unique Festival project, three of Mahler ’s song cycles are performed by Rambert Dance Company, two major singers and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. These are the only performances of this programme, which has been created specially for the Festival.

Dark Elegies was created for the then Ballet Rambert in 1937.It has no specific narrative, but the words of Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the death of children) provide the theme for the ballet.
A beautiful work from the founder of Scottish Ballet. A woman, disenchanted with the glamorous but passing pleasures of her life, finds inner peace.
Songs of a WayfarerThe world premiere of a new work set to Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.
